The collar style of a man’s shirt can change the appearance of the whole
outfit. A button down collar is more casual than a spread collar,
but a tie can certainly be worn with a button down. There
are several styles of spread collars, and this is purely a personal
choice. You can find different collar styles in off the rack
shirts, but there is a wider choice in custom shirts.

Dress Shirt Fabrics

Oxford Cloth – There are several different varieties of Oxford, but all are a weave in which dyed and undyed threads are woven together. This makes for a soft, hard-wearing fabric.

Royal Oxford – This fabric is made the same way as Oxford, but the threads are much finer, so it feels softer and silkier to the touch than Oxford.

Pinpoint is a combination of cotton poplin and Oxford. Only the warp yarn is dyed. The yarn is finer and the weave is tighter than regular Oxford. Pinpoint is more formal than Oxford.

Broadcloth (or poplin) is very tightly woven and has a slight sheen, making it very dressy. It is a lighter fabric than oxford.

Most men wear their jacket sleeves too long. When your arm is straight down by your side, 1/4″ of your shirt cuff should show.

Origin of the Button Down Collar

John Brooks, the grandson of the founder of Brooks Brothers, was attending a polo match. He noticed that the players had added buttons to their shirts to keep the collars from flapping while playing polo. The button down collar was introduced in the United States around 1900

Socks

Socks should be worn high enough so that none of the leg shows while standing or sitting, or not at all. Albert Einstein never wore socks, which is certainly popular nowadays in the warm weather. My good friend William King carries on the sockless tradition, even in New York City in January.

Shoes – an investment

It does not pay to buy cheap shoes, especially shoes that you wear with dress clothes. Great leather makes for a great-looking and comfortable shoes. It is best to try on shoes in the afternoon or evening rather than the morning, so you will know how they will feel on your foot throughout the day.

No matter how expensive the shirt, you won’t like it if the collar does not fit you well.

When you try on a new shirt, button the top button, and you should be able to slide

two fingers between your neck and the collar. The collar will shrink to its final size

after four or five washings.

Jacket Care

Do you wear your suit jacket or sportcoat when you drive?

When a customer shows me a jacket with the lining coming out at the back, the first question I ask is if he wears the jacket when he is driving. Invariably, the answer is yes.

Do not wear a jacket while you are driving.

In addition to the lining issue, the jacket will look like you slept in it.

Another point to think about: a jacket restricts your arm movement, so it could be a safety hazard while driving.
